Vasco da Gama, the Portuguese navigator, after two failed attempts to reach India, landed at Kappad (Kappakadavu), a few miles north of Kozhikode, on 20th May, 1498. Vasco da Gama's arrival was a turning point in Indian history. He was accorded a warm welcome by the Zamorin of Calicut. A stone monument commemorating the landing by Vasco da Gama with a plaque that reads, "Vasco da Gama landed here, Kappakadavu, in the year 1498" was erected here by the Department of Archaeology. The landing place of Vasco da Gama is still a debatable issue among scholars.
