Publications

A publication wing for the Department was instituted in 1978 in order to disseminate to the public the findings of the Department for study, debate and updating. Besides excavation and exploration reports, pamphlets, brochures, and museum handbooks, the Department had already published more than 25 books. The volume on the 1991 excavations at Mangad, entitled The Iron Age in Kerala, is considered to be one of the best reference books on the megalithic culture. The Kerala Archaeological Series was launched in 2010 on the pattern of the nine volumes of the Travancore Archaeological Series brought out between 1910 and 1938.

The activities are under the leadership of the Publication Officer. Publications are available at the offices of the Department of Archaeology, its Museums and Information Centre at East Fort Thiruvananthapuram.

Education

Public awareness about the paths the human race has traversed down the ages should help the people themselves become guardians of their heritage.

Awareness programs and exhibitions are being organized at school and college levels under the auspices of the Education wing of the Department as part of developing awareness about heritage. The Department is trying to make people aware that they are the owners of this tradition and that they have the responsibility to protect it.
