The Valiya Thampuran Kovilakam at Vellarapilli, east of Chovvara, in Ernakulam district, was a palace under the Kochi dynasty. There are two Kovilakams here, south and north of Puthiyedam Temple. Of these, the southern Kovilakam is known as Valiya Thampuran Kovilakam or Vellarapilli Kovilakam. This palace holds special significance as the birthplace of Sakthan Thampuran, who is known as the creator of modern Kochi. There are about twelve rooms, including the Ootupura and kitchen, in this east-facing Nalukettu. The floors are made of laterite and floor is made of clay tiles. The front structure is a porch with two round pillars and an attractive gable. The wooden roof is covered with clay tiles. Some small, but attractive carvings can be found on the woodwork. The tomb of Ramavarma, who passed away on Chovvara, and a Kavu (sacred grove) worshipping the Naga can be seen on the palace premises.
