The Sundaravilasam Palace was constructed by SreemoolamThirunal, the Maharaja of Travancore, in the 19th century C.E. This two storey palace displays both traditional and western-style architectural features. The palace is notable for its roofs, long verandas, arched gate, circular pillars and high walls. The dome-shaped wooden ceiling with beautiful carvings on the second floor is a work of outstanding artistry. This palace was the venue for Pallivetta, a ritual observed as part of the annual Aarattu Festival at Padmanabha Swamy Temple. The Directorate of Archaeology is now functioning in this palace.
