Sree Madhura Meenakshi Temple Poonjar, located in the vicinity of Poonjar Palace, was built by the Rajas of Poonjar. It is believed that the founder of the Poonjar dynasty, Manavikrama Kulashekhara Perumal, shifted from Madurai after incessant civil wars in Tamil Country. The Raja carried one of the three idols of Meenakshi, their tutelary deity, and it was ceremoniously installed in the Meenakshi temple on the banks of the Meenachil River. Historical records reveal that Manavikrama Raja procured the land from the Thekkumkoor Rajas. The Meenakshi temple is a small structure with a tiled roof. It faces the east.
