Suspension Bridge, Punalur

Village: Punalur

Taluk: Pathanapuram

GPS Coordinates: 8° 88’ 85.0” N 76° 90’ 41.2” E

Notification Year: 1990

The suspension bridge across the Kallada River in the heart of Punalur town was constructed during the reign of Travancore King Ayillyam Thirunal Rama Varma (1860–1880). The construction of the suspension bridge started in 1871 and was completed in 1877. The work was supervised by Albert Henry, a Scottish engineer. Its platform is made of wooden planks placed over the iron bars, and its sides are made of metal. The bridge is hanging on huge iron chains; each of them has 53 rings, and its one end is connected to four huge discs attached to the four wells. The force applied at one end of the bridge is balanced by lifting up the other end, which help to equilibrium.
