Notification Year: 1929

Porkalam is a well-known megalithic site excavated by B.K. Thapar in 1948. The site is located in the compound of the Vedakkad temple. Megalithic burial types’ viz., urn burials, rock-cut chambers and Dolmenoid cists are found here. The rock-cut cave at Porkalam has a port-hole and a square entrance. Outside the entrance, there is a rectangular passage with flights of steps on one side. The round pillar, carved out of laterite, is located in the middle. The black and red pottery and iron objects collected from the site are exhibited in various archaeological museums.
