The Poonjar palace on the banks of the Meenachil River in Kottayam was constructed by the Poonjar Rajas and was the royal seat of the ancient Poonjar Kingdom. The Poonjar dynasty is said to have originated from the Pandya Kings of the Sangham Age. The founder of the dynasty was Manavikrama Kulashekhara Perumal. The palace is another example of the traditional architecture of Kerala. It was built primarily of wood. An exquisite collection of furniture, chandeliers, jewelry boxes, palm leaf engravings, weapons and sculptures are housed here.
