The Padmanabhapuram Palace, Thuckalai, Kanyakumari, situated inside the Padmanabhapuram Fort, is a complex of fourteen palaces. This palace complex, spread over an area of 6.5 acres, represents the indigenous architectural features of southern Kerala. The important edifices here are the Poomukham, Plamoottilkottaram, Veppinmoodukottaram, Thaikkottaram, Oottupura, Homappura, Uppirikamalika, Ayudhappura, Chandravilasam, Indravilasam, Navarathrimandapam, Lekshmivilasam or Puthenkottaram and Thekkekottaram. This palace is considered the largest wooden palace in India, made mainly of wood and granite. The mural pagoda on the third floor of the Uppirikkamalika is famous for its exquisite mural paintings.
