Old Police Station, Payyanur

Village: Payyanur

Taluk: Thaliparamba

GPS Coordinates:

Notification Year: 2016

The old police station at Payyanur, which later houses the Sub-Registrar’s office, has witnessed major events during the freedom struggle and post-Independence period. During the Quit India Movement, the Union Jack was removed by a group of freedom fighters from the flag post of this building and hoisted with the National Flag. The building also served as a police lock-up to detain and torture people who had participated in the agrarian struggles in the region. Police lock-up cells are still seen inside this heritage structure. This 150-year-old single-storey building is one of the Indo-European structures remaining in the district and has immense historical value. Now, it is working as the Gandhi Smrithi Museum.
