Narasimha Temple, Chathankulangara

The Chathankulangara Narasimha Temple Vadakkekkara, Chengannur, is a treasure house of wooden sculptures of chaturasra alpavimana fronted by a namaskaramandapa. In this Nirandhara-type temple dated to the 14th century C.E., the granite adhishtana is of manchaka type. The wood carvings on the wall are magnificent and are arranged generally in horizontal registers. Puranic scenes and the images of gods and goddesses are carved with the utmost precision and detailing. The important themes depicted here are Krishnaleela, Puthanamoskham, Narasimha tearing the entrails of Hiranya Kashipu, the story of Setubandhana, Krishna killing Dhenukasura, the dance of Siva, etc.
