Megalithic Monuments, Kuthanoor

Village: Kuthanoor 1

Taluk: Alathur

GPS Coordinates: 10° 41’ 56.7” N 76° 32’ 03.3” E

Notification Year: 2003

These monuments at Kuthanoor mentioned as 'Nannangadi' in the notification are actually port-hole cists of Iron Age. ‘Nannangadi’ is a local name given to all the Megalithic burials by the people of Palakkad region. Large number of cist burials are scattered at an area of 2 acres on the slop of a hillock. The monuments are built by placing a medium sized capstone on four vertical orthostats. The round port holes are found on the eastern side orthostats. Owing to soil erosion and cultivation, almost all cist burials found in this site have been completely exposed.
