Rock-Cut Temple Madavoorpara


Village: Iroorpara

Taluk: Thiruvananthapuram

Notification Year: 1974

The ancient rock-cut temple at Madvoorpara, Iroopara village, Thiruvananthapuram, dating back to the 9th century C.E., is hewn out at the mid height of a huge granite rock. The temple is facing south-west and has an oblong shrine with a rock-cut linga, an ardhamandapa and a pillared facade. On the left wall of the ardhamandapa a relief figure of Ganapathy, and on the right side, a figure of local chieftain could be seen. This cave temple is of the sandhara type (with a circumambulatory passage inside the garbhagriha). On the front of the pillar, there is an inscription in Tamil language and script.
