The Madankavu urn-burial site at Mangad, Kollam, is one of the major megalithic sites excavated by the Department of Archaeology. The excavations in 1991 yielded carnelian beads, varieties of pottery, iron implements, etc. Out of the 30 carnelian beads, 20 are etched varieties. Iron objects excavated from Mangad chiefly consist of wedges, long cutting knife, sickle, tanged knife and blades, which are commonly found in megalithic burials. The major portion of the pottery collection from the site includes the typical black and red ware. The charcoal sample collected from one of the urns in the middle level had a C-14 date of 900 B.C.
