The house belonged to the successors of Kunjali Marakkar, the naval chieftains of the Zamorins, is a single-storey building built in laterite stones. Kunjali Marakkar's fort at Kottakkal, which was as big as a town, and all buildings and mosques inside the fort were razed to the ground by the Portuguese in 1600. The existing house is one of the few structures that survived here. It was originally a building with a thatched roof, which was later renovated to the present style. A museum is arranged in the building behind the memorial, which gives an introduction to the history of the Kunjali Marakkars. The important exhibits include cannon balls and swords collected from the premises.
