The Krishnapuram Palace Kayamkulam, a rich specimen of the architectural tradition of Kerala dating to the 18th century, was built during the reign of Marthanda Varma (1729–1758), the maker of modern Travancore. Krishnapuram Palace, originally constructed by Ramayyan Dalawa, was later modified and extended by Ayyappan Marthanda pilla, who succeeded him as the Diwan of Travancore. Its construction was done between 1750 and 1753 and later renovated between 1761 and 1764. The palace is a traditional pathinarukettu with 22 rooms and four nadumuttams. This two storey edifice comprises the poomukham, kovenithalam, neerazhikettu, nellara, madappally and padippura, the traditional gateway.
