Koyikkal Palace, Nedumangad, Thiruvananthapuram, is one of the oldest two-storied palaces of the Venad kings. This palace was the seat of Perakathu Swaroopam, one of the branches of the Kizhperoor dynasty that ruled Venad. It is a unique example of the 15th century Kerala style of architecture. In 1992, the Department of Archaeology started a museum in the palace buildings that commemorated the monarchy.
It is one of the most impressive museums in numismatics and folklore studies, houses an extensive collection of coins, folk art forms and tools related to ancient folk life in 13 galleries. A number of coins in copper, silver, gold and other alloyed metals from Travancore, other princely states and British India at different periods, as well as ancient Rome, are exhibited here. Chera, Chola, Vijayanagara, Sivaganga and Nayak coins, which were popular in South India, are also arranged here in the gallery.
The folklore section traces the various stages of the development and evolution of culture and art. Specimens of various art forms such as Theyyam, Thullal, Thira, Mudiyettu, Ivarkali, Padayani, Kummatti and visuals of Chettikulangara Bharani, Ochira Kettukazcha etc. can be seen here.
Tools of Pancha Kammalas, chakkimukki (apparatus used for producing fire), old kitchen utensils in wood like Uppumaravi (salt water pot), jars and pots, earthen and metal household utensils, musical instruments like kokkara and chandravalayam dating back to 14th century, Ancient weapons such as various types of swords, shields, urumi, staffs, bows and arrows, old entertainment equipment, ritual and worship related items such as thattuvilakku, ammanakkai, conch shell, old measuring weights like nenmani, kunnikkuru, manchadi to thrass, etc. have been exhibited here.
Many objects that have disappeared from everyday life, like meenkoodu (fishing basket), mukkambarakkettu, pathayakkettu, maravuri, ola grantham, therumkathiyum, kannakkol, kenikal, avilidiyantram, pathayam, agricultural implements from water wheels to mousetraps, etc., remind us about the rich heritage of Kerala. Cave Path is an important attraction which contributes immensely to the popularity of the palace.
Sculptures, bow cart, horse cart, large ural and ulakka, athani, stone paved walkways, etc., in the beautiful garden and pond with many steps also attract visitors here.
