Kottappuram Fort

Village: Methala

Taluk: Kodungallur

GPS Coordinates: 10° 19’ 65.2” N 76° 21’ 19.0” E

Notification Year: 1946

Kottappuram Fort was built by the Portuguese in 1523 to safeguard their maritime trade activities and to protect the king of Kochi, their ally. The Dutch, another European power, laid siege to the Portuguese fort at Kodungallur in early January 1662. Later, Tipu Sulthan attempted to capture Cochin and Travancore. That time, he put pressure on the Dutch to sell the Kodungallur fort to him. Alarmed at this, the King of Travancore purchased the fort from the Dutch in 1789. Declared the fort a protected monument in 1946.
