The Kilimanoor Palace, the birthplace of the world-renowned artist Raja Ravi Varma (1848–1906), holds a very special place in the history of Kerala. This palace complex comprises traditional residential nalukettu structures, small and medium-sized buildings, ponds, wells, and worshiping places. The main entrance of the palace leads to his studio, where some of his masterpieces were born. Standing to the left of the studio is the 'Puthenmalika', one of the more recent buildings in the complex, designed and built by Ravi Varma. There is a Natakasala, where Kathakali and Koodiyattam were once staged.
