Kattilmadam, a granite structure resembles the tradition of alpa vimana of early Pandya or Chola times, is ascribed to the 11th century. It has a square garbhagriha (Sanctum Sanctorum), integrated ardhamandapa and octagonal griva (neck of the dome) and sikhara (cupola). Both the griva and sikhara are made out of one solid stone. Its adhishtana consists of molded tiers like upana, Jagathi, vrithakumuda, kantha and pattika. Even though this temple has the characteristics of early styles, its decorative elements and adhishtana follow that of the typical Kerala tradition.
