Budha Image, Karumadi

GPS Coordinates: 9° 22’ 48.1” N 76° 23’ 10.9” E

Notification Year: 1965

The image of Buddha popularly known as 'Karumadikuttan' at Karumadi near Ambalappuzha is made out of black granite. The left hand of the image was broken and lost. The characteristic features of the Budha image, like ushnisha, jvala, and traces of the upper cloth passing over the chest, are present. It is almost three feet in height and seated in yogasana posture. This granite image pertained to the 8th century was recovered from the nearby canal and set upon a masonry pedestal by A.H. Bastow, a former chief engineer of the erstwhile Travancore state. It is now protected inside a beautiful concrete Budhist-style mandapa.
