The rock-cut temple at Kallil, near Perumbavoor, is carved out of a huge granite rock on the top of a hillock. It is believed to have belonged to the 8th –9th century C.E. This unique rock-cut temple was originally a Jain shrine. After the decline of Jainism, it has been transformed into a Hindu temple. Now the chief deity of this temple is Bhagavathi. On the eastern side, at the top of the entrance of the temple, an unfinished image of seated Mahavira, the 24th Thirthankara of Jain faith, is engraved. Another image of Mahavira can be seen on the back wall of the cavern.
