Itty Achuthan Vaidyar Kuryala and Oushadha Sasyakkavu

Kallatt Itty Achuthan Vaidyar was one of the key figures behind ‘Hortus Malabaricus', a comprehensive catalogue of the flora of the Malabar. This 17th century treatise on the characteristics of plants in Malabar was compiled by Hendrik van Rheede, governor of the Dutch Malabar in the 1670s. To help complete the 12-volume book, AchuthanVaidyar even went to the Netherlands. The 'Kuryala', a small wooden structure with a thatched roof said to have been in existence since the time of Itty Achuthan Vaidyar. His Kuryala and oushadha sasyakkavu (medicinal garden), were declared a protected monuments in 2014.
