Chempil AnanthapadmanabhanValiya Arayan, popularly known as Chempil Arayan, was a great freedom fighter who was martyred on December 29, 1808, in a struggle against the British. The Chempil Arayan is credited with having broken into the British Resident, Col. Colin Macaulay's, premises at Ponjikara. The Resident managed to escape in a boat provided by the head of the Cochin navy. It is said that Chempil Valiya Arayan and his followers raced through the backwaters in 'odi' boats to search for the Resident. The house of Chempil Arayan is a traditional-style small nalukettu structure situated at Chempu near Vaikom.
