The Hill palace (Kanakakkunnu Palace) was the royal seat of the erstwhile rulers of Cochin. Since 1855, this royal mansion has been their official residence. The historical evidence suggests that the oldest building in this palace complex was built by Ravi Varma, who ruled between 1853 and 1864. The palace complex comprises 49 buildings, which reveal the ancient indigenous architectural craftsmanship of Kerala. The total area of the palace complex is 51.75 acres. This complex comprises different blocks such as the poomukham, akathalam, homappura, madappally, oottupura, thevarappura, kulappuramalika, vilampupura etc. The palaces now house the largest archaeological museum in Kerala.
