Ezhimala Fort

Village: Ramanthali

Taluk: Thaliparambu

GPS Coordinates: 12° 04’ 13.4” N 75° 19’ 31.7” E

Notification Year: 1990

Ezhimala was the capital of the ancient Mushaka Dynasty and, later, the Kolathiri Rajas. The Ezhimala Fort, located two kilometres south of Mount Ezhimala, was built by the Portuguese and subsequently held by the French and the British. Historians opine that the name Ezhimala might originate from the word Azhimala, which means 'the mount near the sea'. The fort consists of three hexagonal prismatic structures, one of which has been completely damaged. The walls and the bastions are built with hard laterite stones.
