Excavated Yacht, Kadakkarappally

Notification Year: 2007

The Department of Archaeology excavated a yacht at Thaikkal, near Kadakkarappally, in the season 2002–03. The sail boat with a double mast and flat bottom is 18.70 metres long and 4.05 metres wide. The boat was divided into 11 compartments. The wood used for building the ship is Anjili (Artocarpus hirsutus). Iron and wooden nails of various dimensions had been used for the construction. The stern and upper parts of the hull are totally damaged. The masts were found destroyed, but the mast steps were intact. The excavation has yielded pottery, nails, bones, conch shells, etc.
