District Heritage Museum, Malappuram

The Tirurangadi Hajoor Cutcherry and the Sub-Registrar Office are historical monuments that bear the memories of the invasion and the resistance against it. After the British occupation in 1792, various institutions started to consolidate colonial rule in Malabar. Hajoor Cutcherry in Thirurangadi was established among them.

The present sub-registrar's office is the building that served as a bungalow in connection with that. In 2013, the Department of Archaeology declared these buildings protected monuments, considering their historical importance. The District Heritage Museum is housed in the Hajoor Cutcherry building, which holds a special place in the history of Malappuram. Through modern technologies, the museum presents visitors with a comprehensive history and features of the Malappuram district.

The geography of Malappuram, the art forms, ornaments and metal vessels of the district, the history of the formation of Malappuram, etc., can be known in detail here.

Basic information about Malappuram district, such as rivers flowing through, minerals contained in different soils, geographical indications such as Malappuram Knife-Nilambur Teak, transportation methods of the district, etc., is presented here. Information about Vanadevatha, the unique butterfly of the Western Ghats and Nilambur Cobra Lily, the unique plant of the Western Ghats, also be found here.

Food traditions, medical traditions, features of jewelry, famous ancestral homes, Swaroopas, traditional musical forms, traditional dance forms, and ritual arts of the district are also curiosities of this museum.

Prehistoric period, Megalithic period, Mahodayapuram Cheras period, Princely State period, Mysore invasion period, colonial period, and the history of the Thirungadi and Hajoor cutcherry were revealed to the visitors. Visitors are also led here through the galleries to the period of imperial rule and its aftermath, the Malabar struggle—a struggle against feudal-colonial powers—the re-enactment of the Wagon Tragedy and the Megalithic remains of Malappuram.

The museum also shares a lot of knowledge with the visitors about migrations within the district, emigration from the district, trade and commercial developments, and educational developments.
