Mahodayapuram (Kodungallur) was the capital city of the Perumals, who ruled almost the entire region of the present-day state of Kerala from the 9th century to the 12th century. Cheraman Parambu, near the Tiruvanchikkulam Temple, has been identified as the palace site of the Perumals or later Cheras. Anujan Achan did extensive excavations at the site and published the report in 1947. The State Department of Archaeology, in collaboration with ASI Southern Circle also conducted excavations at Cheraman Parambu in 1969-70. These excavations revealed evidence of the pre-Vaippu era.
