Chennamath Siva Temple

The Chennamath Siva Temple Meenad, Kollam, a unique stone temple of the mediaeval type of temples in Kerala, is dated to the 13th century C.E. The sanctum sanctorum is a circular ekatalaalpavimana. This sandhara-type temple has a tiled conical roof. Two armed dwarapalakas are seen on the flanks of the main door. The principal deity, Siva, is facing the south. In this temple, an array of Koshtadevathas are on the gavakshas. The cardinal north and south sides have false doors within makara torana scheme. The Vattezhuthu inscriptions seen on the adhishtana state that the construction of the temple was started in 446 M.E. (1271 C.E.) and completed in 448 M.E. (1273 C.E.).
