Changampally Kalari in Thirunavaya is associated with Mamankam, an ancient festival held once every 12 years on the banks of the river Bharathapuzha. The history of the Changampally family is also connected with Mamankam. Their ancestors were Tulu Brahmins. King Cheraman Perumal brought them from Tulunadu to perform Kalarippayattu at Mamankam. After the decline of the Cheras, Zamorin of Calicut became the patron of Mamankam. The Changampally Gurukkals imparted training in Kalarippayattu to Zamorin's soldiers and gave treatments. Later, Changampally Gurukkals converted to Islam. The age old Kalari of the family is a small, single-storey structure with a traditional gabled roof.
