Notification Year: 1966

The image of Buddha at Mavelikkara is three feet in height, including the pedestal upon which it is seated. This Budha image has jvala, ushnisha, and the upper cloth spread over the image's chest. The upper cloth, which is worn in the upavitha fashion, comes behind the body and the left arm; therefore, the sculptor has left the stone uncut while the corresponding interspace between the right arm and the body is cut. This image in yogasana posture dates back to the 9th century C.E. It was discovered in the compound attached to a house near the Traveler's Bungalow at Mavelikkara.
