Arikkady Fort, was built by the Nayakas of Ikkeri, who were an important though minor ruling dynasty in Karnataka during post-mediaeval Karnataka. The Ikkeri Nayakas, a line of feudatory chieftains, rose to power after the decline of the Vijayanagara Kingdom in 1565. Viswappa Nayaka and his heirs constructed forts at Bandadka, Kandamkuzhy, Povval, Kumbala (Arikkadi), Kasargode and Hozdurg. The entire fortification at Arikkady was built with dressed laterite stones. A massive watch tower, circular in structure with a ramp, stands on the northern side, inside the fortification.
