Ananthapuram, the unique lake temple of Kerala, is believed to have been built during 14th century C.E. The square dwitalasrikovil of sandhara-type (a shrine with circumambulatory passage inside the sanctum) carries an integrated mukhamandapa. The walls of the srikovil are made out of dressed laterite stones. Two layers of murals are found on the walls of the sanctum sanctorum. The oldest layer may be ascribed to 14th century and the other is believed to have been painted at the time of the renovation of the temple in the 17th century. The inscriptions found on the granite stone in front of the sub shrine of Ganesa are in Tulu dialect, engraved in Malayalam script.
