Pazhassi Kudeeram Museum, Mananthavady

Pazhassi Kudeeram at Mananthavadi is one of the important historical monuments in Wayanad. The tomb of the brave patriot Kerala Varma Pazhassiraja, who sacrificed his life in the fight against the British, forms the fulcrum of the monument. The District Heritage Museum and a beautiful garden attract visitors.

Kerala Varma Pazassiraja is a vibrant fighter in the history of the Indian freedom struggle. The archaeology Department took over his tomb in Mananthavady and later developed it as a museum. Kerala Varma, who was a member of the Kottayam dynasty based in Kannur Pazassi, started his legendary struggle by fighting against Tipu Sultan along with the British. This rift between the Pazhassi and Tipu is due to the act of the Kottayam King, who transferred the power of Wayanad to Tipu. Pazhassi tried to regain power. Even though Tipu was defeated, Wayanad was not returned to Kottayam dynasty, and then he opened a new front against the British.

After several fierce battles, which he organised by associating the natives and Kurichiars (a tribal community), Pazhassi was shot dead by the British on November 30, 1805, in a battle on the banks of Mavilamthod in Pulpalli. In honour of Pazhassi's fighting spirit, Thalassery Sub-Collector, T.H Babar carried his body in his own palanquin to Mananthavady Hospital Hill and cremated it with full honour.

The museum, which was opened here in 1996, was expanded and inaugurated in 2008.

There are four galleries: Pazhassi Gallery, Tribal Gallery, Heritage Gallery and Coin Gallery. The history of Pazhassi's struggle, the agreement made by Pazhassi with the British, the proclamation declaring him and his companions as traitors, the letter informing the leaders of the East India Company that he was killed and exact copies of many documents, weapons such as swords, arrows and bows of the Pazhassi era can be seen here.

The agricultural implements, musical instruments and household utensils of the tribes of Wayanad can be understood in the tribal gallery. The Heritage Gallery is a venue that tells the history of Wayanad from prehistoric to colonial times.

The valuable information about Edakkal cave engravings, Ezhuthupara engravings, trade links, Kidanganadu and Panamaram Jain temples can be acquired. Artefacts such as Nannangadi, Pottery and hero stones shed light on the rich history of Wayanad. The Coin Gallery presents an opportunity to see ancient Chera coins to British-Dutch-Tipu Sultan-Kannur-Thiruvithamkoor coins.
