The activities of the Department of Archaeology at the state level are coordinated and controlled by the Directorate located at Sundaravilasam Palace in East Fort, Thiruvananthapuram. The functions of the Department are carried out by 17 museums in various districts and their attached offices. The Director is the head. The work of the technical staff is under the leadership of Superintending Archaeologist, Epigraphist, and Conservation officer under the Director. Regional Conservation Laboratory, Conservation Engineering Wing and extensive library are also functioning in the head office. 192 monuments of archaeological importance have been notified and preserved.

Administrative affairs are carried out by the ministerial wing. Under the leadership of the Finance Officer, Senior Superintendent, Personal Assistant, and Junior Superintendent, the employees of this section are responsible for day-to-day affairs, financial affairs, budget preparation, purchases, etc. There are 301permanent posts.
